We make ourselves available to everyone with questions on our projects. Our job does not stop when the working drawings are complete. I had spoken with the builder during the permitting process ensuring him we are here to help him with whatever it takes to build our clients home as designed. Issues can come up that we can help to resolve.
In this case, the builder’s masonry subcontractor missed the details of two steel beams being embedded into masonry piers for a covered porch over a walkout basement. One fix was to remove the upper portion of the piers and them rebuild the pier. It is likely the mortar would not match at the repair. The builder asked if I could come up with another solution.
We came up with a solution that did not require the expensive pier reconstruction and would not change the intent of the design. We re-detailed the beam and the connections. Before the joist was to sit on top of the steel beam. We ended up going with a taller treated beam where the joist would hang to the side of the beam. This also required changing the rail post mounting to meet the building code
